Back online

Hello world – again :)

The blog was off-line for a quite a while due to some hassles during change of hosting provider. SH Networks sold the hosting services to Neobitti, but forgot to tell them that I had actually paid my bills :( This lead into deactivation of my account and expiration of the domain name, which is pretty bad if you want to keep your blog online.

Anyhow, thanks to kind and prompt help of Neobitti folks, I got my domain back. Unfortunately, there was no full backup on the site so I had to restore blog posts and comments from my own achieves. Now all the old posts and comments should be online and even the old permalinks should work…

I still have to update the templates and there seems to be some issues with fonts, etc. Maybe I fix those some day :) This hassle has now efficiently destroyed two days of time from other work, so maybe I have to give a go for other things for a while…

K70

Don Johnston Big Band

This year we spend the night of Wappu eve at April Jazz tent in Espoo listening Don Johnson Big Band. Tommy and the band had great energy and delivered excellent gig. As said also earlier, go to see them if you have a change.

Yesterday we went to see the “Rajaton Joulu” (“Boundless Christmas”) concert by Rajaton, an excellent Finnish a cappella team. The show was outstanding! By far the best Christmas concert I have ever seen. Even the cheer talent of the singers makes deep impression, but when that is combined with the truly boundless scope of the music styles and brilliant stage performance, the quote from the bands web site hits right on the spot:

The group is distinguished by brilliance and ensemble virtuosity coupled with warmth and richness in sound that can only be described as boundless

Keep checking the concert calendar and go to the next gig near you!

James Brown on stage

Yesterday we went to see the “King of Soul” – James Brown – on L?ɬ§nsi-Auto areena, Espoo. Unfortunately, the experience was far from perfect: Purchasing beer or food was nearly impossible; The show was quite a lame; it started very late (ok, that was due to heavy snowing and not the organizers foul); and (like always in Finland) security guards managed to kill the atmosphere. On the other hand, Don Johnston Big Band played a great gig and they had much more time to play, when the King was sitting in the plane.

But, how it can be so difficult to organize working customer service in Finland! Again there were far too few girls behind the counters compared to the number of thirsty music fans in the arena and it would not help the situation that clearly the personnel had trainee level skills on selling a lot of beer fast. More experienced staff would have sold five times more drinks than what we saw yesterday. How it could be possible that you have to wait 40 minutes in line to get a beer?? Clearly someone did not want money…

And then to the main business; i.e., the performance of Mr. Brown. Yes, there were plenty of talented musicians on the stage (over 20 people), good music (every now and then), and good looking dancing girls. But, there was also a lot of boring bragging on how big star in on the stage, way too long phases when nothing really happened, only parts of the songs everyone wanted to hear, and (to be honest) old and tired main star. The Soul Man himself had still his voice and some moved, but the durability is not there anymore: I think he song like 3-4 minutes and then there was at least 15 minutes of all kind of unnecessary solos and side programs.

So in summary:

  • Go to see Don Johnson, if you have a change!
  • Never go to L?ɬ§nsi-Auto areena for concert
  • If you want to see James Brown live, you may not have many changes left… But don’t expect great show :(

Internet is an interesting place. By pure change the folks from Schmap City guide has found from Flickr some photos I took on holiday trip to Dublin and two of those are in their new Dublin guide. Check it out; e.g., by using the convenient Schmap picker:

Who’s the first one to find my photos from the guide? ;-)

Thanks to Juhani’s blog I found an excellent ski travel planning tool. Provided by Ski Magazine. Just select the right parameters and hit the find button; for example: if you like “Snow Quality, Annual Snowfall, Apres Ski, and Total Vertical” place to go are:

  1. Alta, UT
  2. Jay Peak, VT
  3. Bretton Woods, NH
  4. Snowbird, UT
  5. Okemo Mountain, VT
  6. Sugarloaf/USA, ME
  7. Solitude, UT
  8. Sunday River, ME
  9. Mount Sunapee, NH
  10. Mammoth, CA

Give it a try before your next trip to North America

On the wall again

Now I have been visiting Kiipeilykeskus few times and seems that I will be there quite often. So maybe it is time to invest in some climbing gear. Does anyone out there know any decent climbing equipment shops in Paris? I will be there tomorrow (sat 8.4.) and would have some time for shopping…

A month ago I sent text refund application to Canadian tax authorities. I did not have too much faith on the system, but when I got home Today (from one week trip to California), there was a letter waiting from Canada. My tax refund application had been approved as such and the letter included an EUR value check that I should be able to cash in Nordea band here in Finland. I’m amazed!

Today was my second time on indoor wall. We went to beginners course on last saturday. The course was in liikuntamylly at myllypuro (helsinki). It was very good to check the basics of theory and practice with a pro before starting. Today we went to kiipeilykeskus at Tapanila (helsinki), which has higher walls seems to also othervice more professional establishment. I think we got hooked to the sport, so you may find me again hanging on the wall.
